Alexandria

Alexandria needs 2 days: the modern Library of Alexandria (a tribute to the ancient one) and the Qaitbay Citadel (built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse) on one, and the seafront Corniche on the other. June-September brings the Mediterranean breeze that softens Egypt's heat, unlike the desert interior. It's cheaper than Cairo, with a more relaxed, less chaotic atmosphere. It was founded by Alexander the Great and once held the Great Library of Antiquity and one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world (the Lighthouse), though both vanished centuries ago and only historical references remain.
