Lalibela

Lalibela needs 2 days, almost entirely dedicated to its 11 monolithic churches carved from solid rock in the 12th century. October-March is the recommended dry season. It's inexpensive, though limited access (scarce flights) adds logistical cost. Its churches, excavated downward from the rock surface rather than built upward, are considered Ethiopia's «New Jerusalem» and remain an active Orthodox Christian pilgrimage site, with religious ceremonies held there uninterrupted for 800 years.
