Richat Structure (Eye of the Sahara)
Ouadane · Adrar · Mauritania
The Richat Structure, known as the 'Eye of the Sahara', is an almost perfectly circular formation 40 km wide, so symmetrical that early astronauts used it as a visual landmark from space. For decades it was thought to be a meteorite impact crater, but current geological studies point to a dome of rock eroded into a symmetrical shape over time. It's best seen from the air or in satellite photos.
