About Freetown
Freetown needs 2 days: the Cotton Tree, a centuries-old tree in the city center under which freed enslaved people are said to have prayed upon arriving in 1792, on one, and the beaches of the Freetown Peninsula -River Number Two, Lakka-, a short distance from downtown, on the other. November-April is best, avoiding the rainy season. It's inexpensive by international standards. It was founded as a settlement for enslaved people freed by the British Empire, hence its name («free town»), and its natural harbor, one of the largest and deepest in the world, is what gave it strategic value since the 18th century.
