Tunis needs 2 days: the medina (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) on one, and the nearby ruins of Carthage on the other. March-May avoids the extreme heat of the Maghreb summer. It's inexpensive, among North Africa's cheapest capitals. It's one of the oldest cities in North Africa, neighboring the ruins of ancient Carthage (Rome's historic rival), and its medina retains an urban layout virtually unchanged since medieval times, with over 700 monuments including mosques, palaces and mausoleums.
