Yogyakarta needs 3 days: Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple, ideally visited at sunrise, on one, the Hindu temple of Prambanan at sunset on another, and the Kraton (Sultan's Palace) and Malioboro market on the third. May-September brings the dry season. It's among Indonesia's most affordable cities. It's the only city in Indonesia still governed by a sultanate with special status within the republic, and its Borobudur, built in the 9th century and buried under volcanic ash for centuries until its rediscovery in 1814, is the world's largest Buddhist monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
