The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, better known as the Blue Mosque for its blue-tiled interior, is Istanbul's most important mosque. It was built by Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I between 1609 and 1616 and was designed to rival the grandeur of Hagia Sophia. It stands next to the Byzantine Hippodrome, in the city's historic center.
