About Karlštejn
Karlštejn is a half-day visit: Karlštejn Castle, built in the 14th century by Emperor Charles IV to safeguard the crown jewels and sacred relics, overlooks the village from a wooded hill. April-October is best for the 30-minute walk from the station up to the castle. It's cheap as a day trip from Prague, just 40 minutes away by train. It's the most visited castle in Czechia after Prague's, and its Chapel of the Holy Cross, covered in gold and inlaid with over 2,000 semi-precious stones, can only be visited with advance booking due to its fragility.
