About Chamonix
Chamonix needs 2 days: riding the cable car up to the Aiguille du Midi, at 3,842 meters with direct views of Mont Blanc, Western Europe's tallest mountain, on one, and crossing the border on the Skyway Monte Bianco into Italy or touring the Mer de Glace, France's largest glacier, on the other. June-September brings the best hiking weather; December-March is ski season. It's expensive, among France's priciest mountain destinations. It hosted the first Winter Olympics in history in 1924, and its Aiguille du Midi cable car, opened in 1955, remains one of the highest in the world.
