About Chinon
Chinon takes 1 day to see: the Royal Fortress, a 10th-15th century castle on a cliff overlooking the Vienne river, where in 1429 Joan of Arc first recognized the future King Charles VII disguised among his courtiers, is the center of the visit. April-September is best. It's inexpensive by French standards. It was the birthplace of Renaissance writer François Rabelais, and its royal fortress -now partly in ruins after being dismantled by Richelieu in the 17th century- was once one of France's most important royal residences.
