Bamberg

Bamberg needs 2 days: the Imperial Cathedral and the Old Town Island (Klein Venedig, small fishermen's houses over the Regnitz River) on one, a traditional brewery trail -including the historic smoked Rauchbier- on the other. May-September is best. It's cheaper than Munich, 1 hour away by train. Its old town, virtually untouched by World War II, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and with over 60 active breweries in the region (9 within the city itself), it has the highest density of breweries per capita in the world.
