About Luneburg
Lüneburg takes 1 day to see: the historic center, with Gothic brick houses visibly tilting from ground subsidence caused by centuries of underground salt extraction, is the main reason to visit. April-October is best. It's inexpensive by German standards. It was for centuries one of northern Germany's wealthiest cities thanks to its salt monopoly, a mineral so valuable in the Middle Ages it was nicknamed «white gold», and that same extraction -now stopped- is the cause of the visible tilt in much of its historic buildings.
