About Trier
Trier needs 1 day: the Porta Nigra, the best-preserved Roman gate north of the Alps, on one end, the ruins of the imperial baths and the Roman amphitheater on the other. April-September is best. It's cheaper than other German cities of similar historic weight. It's Germany's oldest city, founded by the Romans in 16 BC as Augusta Treverorum, and went on to become one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire; its collection of Roman monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest north of the Alps.
