About Pécs
Pécs needs 2 days: Pasha Qasim's Mosque, Hungary's largest intact Ottoman structure, now converted into a Catholic church, on one, and the underground Early Christian necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the other. April-June and September-October are best. It's inexpensive for Europe. It was named European Capital of Culture in 2010, and its unique combination of overlapping Roman, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian remnants within a few blocks -few Central European cities preserve so many historical layers so close together- made it one of Hungary's lesser-known but richest cultural destinations.
