Eger needs 2 days: Eger Castle, which withstood an Ottoman siege in 1552 despite being vastly outnumbered, on one, and the Valley of the Beautiful Women, with dozens of underground wine cellars from the Bull's Blood (Egri Bikavér) wine region, on the other. May-September is best. It's inexpensive for Europe. The 1552 siege, where 2,000 Hungarian defenders held off a 40,000-strong Ottoman army, became a national symbol of resistance, and its Egri Bikavér red wine, with centuries of winemaking tradition, is one of Hungary's most renowned.
