Ostia Antica Archaeological Park
Rome · Lazio · Italy
The Ostia Antica Archaeological Park is an archaeological site set around the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Ostia, once a port and trading hub. It's known for the excellent preservation of its buildings, many of which contain impressive frescoes and mosaics. The site's history dates back to the 4th century BC, while the oldest buildings on display — including the ancient military camp — date to the 3rd century BC. Ostia was the scene of a fierce battle during the civil war of Sulla, was sacked by pirates in 68 BC, and underwent renovations and improvements under Roman rulers such as Julius Caesar, Tiberius, Claudius and Trajan. It's a must-visit for history buffs and anyone interested in life in Ancient Rome.
