About Bergamo
Bergamo needs 1 day: the Città Alta, the walled upper town reached by funicular, with Piazza Vecchia ringed by Renaissance buildings, is the center of the visit. April-October is best. It's inexpensive by Italian standards, especially compared to Milan, just 50 minutes away by train. Its 16th-century Venetian walls, built when the city was part of the Republic of Venice, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with five other Venetian defense systems in Italy and Croatia.
