About Bolzano
Bolzano needs 1 day: visiting the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, home to Ötzi, the Copper Age mummy found frozen in an Alpine glacier in 1991, and strolling through the bilingual old town, with signs in Italian and German, the same afternoon. May-September brings the best weather to explore the nearby Dolomites. It's mid-to-upper priced given its Alpine profile. It was Austro-Hungarian territory until 1919, and its population still speaks mostly German as a mother tongue, with a Tyrolean cultural identity that has coexisted with Italian administration for just over a century.
