Pitti Palace was built for the Renaissance banker Luca Pitti. A loyal advisor to Cosimo de' Medici, Pitti wanted to build a mansion to rival those of the powerful Medici family. He did quite well: about 100 years after it was built, the Medici acquired it and moved in. With a grand courtyard, the Royal Apartments, the Palatine Gallery and richly designed Baroque interiors, it's a worthy Renaissance palace.
