Assisi

Assisi takes 1 day to see: the Basilica of St. Francis, with Giotto frescoes narrating the saint's life and a crypt holding his tomb, in a morning walk, and the medieval pink-stone streets of the old town, in the afternoon. April-October is best. It's mid-priced by Italian standards. It's the birthplace of St. Francis, founder of the Franciscan order, and of St. Clare, and remains one of Italy's leading Catholic pilgrimage destinations, with the basilica a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
