Orvieto takes 1 day to see: the cathedral, with a Gothic façade of golden mosaics considered one of the most beautiful in Italy, in a morning walk, and the tunnels and wells carved into the volcanic rock beneath the city, some of Etruscan origin, in the afternoon. April-October is best. It's mid-priced by Italian standards. It's built on a volcanic tuff outcrop that rises sharply over the valley, and its more than 1,200 underground caves and tunnels, dug over 2,500 years, are still being discovered today beneath houses and shops.
