Maastricht

Maastricht needs 2 days: the historic center and Vrijthof square on one, Fort Sint Pieter next to the Grotten Noord caves -a network of limestone tunnels dug since Roman times- on the other. April-September has the best weather for walking around. It's cheaper than Amsterdam, with prices similar to Belgium, a country it almost blends into geographically. It's the oldest city in the Netherlands -founded by the Romans- and the most «un-Dutch» in the country, with an identity and culinary influence much closer to Belgium and the neighboring German region than to the rest of Holland.
