The Begijnhof is one of Amsterdam's oldest inner courtyards («hofjes»), founded in the 14th century as home to the Beguines, a lay community of religious women. Inside stands Het Houten Huys, the city's oldest wooden house (circa 1420), along with a hidden Catholic chapel tucked behind ordinary facades.
