Zaanse Schans is a half-day visit: a handful of working windmills and traditional green houses relocated to the banks of the Zaan River to form an open-air museum village. April-September is best, with the windmills grinding spices, mustard or pigments in front of visitors. It's affordable and easy as a day trip from Amsterdam, 20 minutes away by train. It's not an intact historic village but a carefully assembled 1960s reconstruction, built from authentic buildings across the Zaan region -the world's first industrial zone, with over 600 active windmills in the 17th century- to preserve that heritage in one place.
