Torun needs 2 days: the Gothic brick old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the few in Poland to survive World War II intact, on one, and the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, today an interactive astronomy museum, on the other, without skipping the pierniki, the traditional gingerbread cookies the city has made since the 14th century. May-September brings the best weather. It's among the most affordable cities in Poland for tourists. It was founded by the Teutonic Order in the 13th century and is the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, the astronomer who formulated the heliocentric model of the solar system, and its historic center, having escaped wartime bombing, is one of the best examples of Gothic brick architecture in all of Central Europe.
