It was founded by the Teutonic Order in the 13th century and is the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, the astronomer who formulated the heliocentric model of the solar system, and its historic center, having escaped wartime bombing, is one of the best examples of Gothic brick architecture in all of Central Europe.
