Krakow needs 2 days: the market square and Wawel Castle on one, and a trip to the Wieliczka Salt Mine or the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp on the other. May-September brings the best weather. It's cheaper than Warsaw. It was Poland's capital for nearly 500 years and one of the few major Polish cities to survive World War II nearly intact, and its proximity to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp makes it the starting point for one of the world's most visited historical memory sites.
