About Óbidos
Óbidos takes just a few hours: a completely walled village, with walls walkable end to end offering views of white houses trimmed in color, and a medieval castle converted into a historic inn (pousada). April-October is best, except July, when the village fills with the Medieval Market, a large-scale historical reenactment. It's cheap and compact, ideal as a half-day trip from Lisbon. It was traditionally a wedding gift from Portuguese kings to their queens since the 13th century -hence its nickname «the town of queens»-, and its ginjinha (sour cherry liqueur) served in little chocolate cups is a local tradition tasted throughout Portugal.
