National Pantheon
Lisbon City · Lisbon · Portugal
Portugal's National Pantheon is located near Alfama, in Lisbon, specifically in the Church of Santa Engrácia. The original church on this site was destroyed by a storm in 1681. Construction of the new church began in 1682 and wasn't completed until 284 years later, giving rise to the popular expression "works of Santa Engrácia," referring to something that never ends. Since 1916 it has served as the National Pantheon, housing the tombs of some of the country's most notable citizens.
