About Covadonga
Covadonga needs 1 day: touring the Santa Cueva, where tradition places the origin of the Kingdom of Asturias in the year 722, the Basilica, and the Lakes of Covadonga high up in the massif, in a single day. June-September brings the best weather for going up to the lakes, whose access by private car is usually restricted in high season. It's mid-priced, though lake access may add the cost of the shuttle bus. It's considered the symbolic birthplace of Spain as a Christian nation, thanks to the Battle of Covadonga that traditionally marks the start of the Reconquista, and its glacial lakes Enol and La Ercina are among the most photographed landscapes of the Picos de Europa.
