About Somiedo
Somiedo needs 2 days: hiking to the glacial Saliencia Lakes on one, and searching for Cantabrian brown bear signs with a local guide or visiting the Bear Center, on the other. June-September brings the mildest hiking weather. It's inexpensive by Asturian standards. It's been a Biosphere Reserve since 1988 and one of the last refuges of the wild Cantabrian brown bear, and it still preserves «teitos», stone huts with thatched roofs used by transhumant shepherds practicing vaqueira, a form of seasonal livestock herding unique to the area.
