Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial
Madrid City · Madrid · Spain
The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, also known as El Escorial Monastery, was a monastery and boarding school that Philip II turned into a mausoleum for himself and his family. Thanks to the abundance of pine trees and woodland around it, it was a very peaceful place during the Renaissance, far removed from Madrid's modern life. This historic royal residence and resting place of the kings of Spain is located in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, about 45 km northwest of Madrid.
