Birmingham needs 1 day: touring the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, across from the 16th Street Baptist Church -target of a racist bombing in 1963 that killed four girls-, and going up to the Vulcan Park overlook, with the world's largest cast iron statue, a symbol of the steel industry that founded the city, the same afternoon. April-June and September-October bring the mildest weather. It's inexpensive for the US South. It was one of the most violent epicenters of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, and its historic district documents that past with an approach that made it a must for understanding racial segregation and its overcoming in the United States.
