About Saint Augustine
Saint Augustine needs 1 day: touring Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States, built by Spain in 1672 out of coquina -a shell-based rock-, and climbing St. Augustine Lighthouse for a view over the city, the same afternoon. March-May brings mild temperatures before the humid summer heat. It's inexpensive for Florida. Founded in 1565 by Spaniard Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it's the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the United States, nearly half a century before Jamestown and over half a century before the Mayflower's arrival.
