About Hilo
Hilo needs 2 days: touring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, with the active Kilauea volcano and its lava flows visible at night during eruptions, on one, and visiting Rainbow Falls and the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, with over 2,000 plant species by the ocean, on the other. April-September brings less rain (Hilo is among the rainiest cities in the US, with over 3,000 mm annually). It's cheaper than Honolulu or Maui. It's the usual gateway to Kilauea volcano, one of the world's most active -nearly continuously erupting from 1983 to 2018-, and its humid climate made it the world's orchid capital, with the state's biggest flower festival every April.
