Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island needs 2 days: touring the island by bicycle or horse-drawn carriage -where cars have been banned since 1898-, and visiting Fort Mackinac, an 1780 British fortification with views of Lake Huron, the same afternoon. June-September is the only season with good weather and regular ferries from the mainland. It's expensive for Michigan, given its exclusive tourist destination profile. It's one of the few communities in the United States where motor vehicles have been legally banned for over a century, and its handmade fudge production -a tradition since the 19th century- earned it the nickname 'Fudge Island' among tourists.
