April-September brings the coolest weather. It's mid-priced by Brazilian standards. Founded by Dom Pedro II as the imperial court's summer retreat to escape Rio's heat, it retains a layout of canals and European mansions unique in Brazil, and was also home to aviation pioneer Santos Dumont.
