About Piriápolis
Piriápolis needs 2 days: the seafront promenade with the Hotel Argentino, a 1930 palace that marked the start of beach tourism in Uruguay, on one, the chairlift ascent of Cerro San Antonio, with views over the entire bay, on the other. December-March is high season. It's cheaper than Punta del Este, 60 km away. It was Uruguay's first planned resort town, built from scratch in the 1890s by businessman Francisco Piria, who had millions of trees planted in a previously arid area to create the green landscape that defines the town today.
